Designer KateMazza brings vintage beauty to an 18-year-old home

Lots of clients want to update the style of their older homes , says Hawthorne resident Kate Mazza , owner of Mazza Collective . Her design mission for this Upper Montclair home , though , was the opposite : to create alook that made the relatively new residence feel older .
The owner , aNew Yorker whose father was an antique dealer , had alot of beautiful vintage furniture , and that made Mazza ’ sjob easier . Her husband is Scottish , and Mazza made it her goal to incorporate features that foster an old-fashioned , homey sensibility inthe L-shaped home .

The creamy wallpaper in the formal living room offers a nice contrast to the flooring , which has a dark stain to impart an old-world charm , says Mazza . The roll-top vintage desk is an antique from First Dibs , an online marketplace that posts inventory from antique stores worldwide . The vintage café chair came with the homeowner ; the acrylic bar cart is another piece she inherited . The stair runner with custom taped binding is new , as is the artwork by Caleb Mahoney framed in burlwood . Mazza paired the vintage bench seen below the landing with a hammered brass side table . The unlacquered brass of the door handles will grow a patina with time , she says , giving the space a “ well-loved feeling .”
