To keep the conversation going with lovedones , Socialustice Leadership adge administrators suggestthe following approaches , depending on the circumstances
Ifyou are sharing news , describe the experience . Talk about what you learned , and share an example of what surprised you the most or challenged your understanding . ow did it make you feel and what did you learn about yourself
Are you addressingabehavior or concern If so , spend time talking to them abouttheir point of view . eep in mind that you can inuence change by sharing information you have learned and offering adifferent perspective . e patient . If they say something that is hurtful , tell them directly how it hurt your feelings and why .
Offer to share resources that you foundhelpful , such as atext or email . If you saw a video clip that was especially useful , suggest watching it together and talk about the different viewpoints and ideas that emerged from the program .
“ Some of the issues she pointed out stood out to me ,” says Patel . “ The presentation gets people engaged , and then even those who often feel shy around delicate topics can open up through the chat option , or voice opinions .” Patel points out that medical professionals “ should value everybody equally . I ’ m pretty sure I ’ ll have the confidence to engage with others and see things from their perspectives ,” she says .
nderstanding the communities WP students will be working with as professionals is a large part of the program ’ s mission , says Gonell . “ It ’ s really tied to career readiness ,” she says . “ If you ’ re studying engineering , we hope you ’ ll develop considerations around how your designs are used by a diverse group of people .
Ifyou learned atip or strategy , model the behavior or action that you learned . ractice and apply it to your everyday interactions .
Asaninuencer , share resources and tips on social media . Inspire others to practice interventions as change agents .
Alot of our students work in the Paterson schools . They need to understand how their students are learning , what their resources are . If they ’ re conscious of how to resolve conict across differences now , they ’ ll carry that into the workforce .”
Gaffney , who has already earned her badge , has experienced how her social justice training makes her more attractive to employers . She intends to be an urban planner , for which she ’ ll need a masters degree , and is writing a thesis about racial gentrification .“ I went to an American Planning Association conference , and people there said ‘ We ’ re so interested in this now , that ’ s a great idea ,’” she says .
The next step in the program ’ s development may be to place SJLBtrained
students in roles where they can use their skills . “ As pandemic restrictions decrease , we are exploring ways to connect students to civic engagement projects , in person and virtually ,” says Maribel odrigue , Associate Director-Office of Campus Activities , Service and Leadership . WP also plans tolaunch an online diversity training program that students can take at their own pace . ■
