Andrew Bernstein, DO REGIONAL CANCER CARE ASSOCIATES | 97 W PARKWAY | POMPTON PLAINS | 973.567.3715 | WWW.REGIONALCANCERCARE.ORG DR. ANDREW BERNSTEIN, DIRECTOR OF ONCOLOGY FOR CHILTON MEDICAL CENTER, IS A TOP DOCTOR BECAUSE OF HIS EXTENSIVE KNOWLEDGE IN THE DIAG- NOSIS AND TREATMENT OF CANCER. “I am able to articulate a tough diagnosis and treatment plan to patients and to be there for them in a compassionate way,” he said. He specializes in hematology, the study of blood in health and disease, and medical oncology, the diagnosis and treatment of all types of cancer, and is board certified in both. His clinical strengths also include breast, colon and lung cancer. Dr. Bernstein noted that the field of oncology continues to evolve. New drugs and treatment protocols are emerging, as is the ability to identify the types of cancer appropriate for their use. The most advanced and effective therapies available include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, radiation, clinical trials, radiosurgery, surgery, genetic testing and palliative care. Dr. Bernstein has incorporated preventive programs into his practice. To help combat breast cancer, genetic testing is offered for predictive purposes. This is particularly valuable when a patient has a family history of breast cancer caused by an inherited genetic mutation. Genetic testing can help determine if the patient carries the mutated gene. He advocates targeted therapy, the use of drugs to hunt down cancer cells while leaving healthy cells alone. Called preci- sion medicine, it uses scientific information about a patient’s genes and cell pro- teins to treat cancer. In some cases, it can help prevent disease or diagnose it. Dr. Bernstein regularly leads tumor board meetings held at CMC, presenting cases and discussing them among colleagues, and coordinating patients’ multi- disciplinary care. Throughout treatment, Dr. Bernstein and his partner Dr. Martin Frank provide support to their patients and loved ones, helping them connect with support groups and nutritional guidance provided through the Collins Pavilion. They also find psychological guidance, secure transportation to treatment, and find advocates who determine if a patient qualifies for economic assistance with the support of Lorelei Fen, NP, Eileen Gentile, RN, and staff. Dr. Bernstein said he is “fortunate” to be a physician within Regional Cancer Care Associates, the largest statewide provider of oncology care. Oncologists throughout the 30-location network afford shared resources and access to col- leagues to provide better care. Dr. Bernstein received his medical degree from New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his internship and residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New York, where he was awarded numerous honors including Intern of the Year and Teaching Resident of the Year. He completed fellowships in hematology and oncology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, where he served as chief fellow. He derives satisfaction from being able to “take a patient through the toughest time in their life and, when first diagnosed faced with what seems a hopeless situation, provide treatment that has the best possible outcome.” Dr. Bernstein added, “We are able to provide the highest standard of care in a community setting and in a personalized way.” que optatis cum harum ulparcillam fuga.
