LOOKING BACK Embracing the Past Circa 1900 Pequannock Township is currently looking into buying the historic Martin Berry Home within its borders. One of the oldest homes in the state, some of the structure dates back to the 1720s. Township historian Ed Engelbart hopes it will be “a place to educate present and future generations of young people.” The overall plan for the house includes restoring its historic features, like the fireplace in the southwest corner and updating it with modern features, like meeting rooms. Engelbart, who has served as mayor and councilman in the town, sees many potential uses for the old house, including using it as a place to showcase art and teach people about local history. “Maybe it can even be used as a place to hold festivals,” he says. – Information courtesy Pequannock Township Historic Society, photograph from the collection of Mrs. Elanor Bogert Do you have a great photo for Looking Back?
