Knee replacement implants have improved the lives of millions of people with severe knee arthritis and today knee
replacement is one of the most successful medical device
surgeries thanks to continuous advancements in surgical
materials and techniques. According to the Agency for
Healthcare Research and Quality, more than 600,000 knee
replacements are performed each year in the United States.
At the Total Joint Center at Chilton Medical Center, a new
technological development known as “customized” or “personalized” knee replacement surgery, improves the surgical
experience for knee replacement patients, specifically with
regard to alignment, knee sizing, and bone preservation.
Employing the use of imaging equipment, a three dimensional (3D) blueprint of the patient’s arthritic knee is delivered
to the surgeon weeks before the surgery so that precise
planning and sizing of the knee replacement can occur.
Dr. Kayal’s customized knee replacements rely on the use
of patient specific instrumentation which is created based on
the patient’s unique anatomy.
The process begins several weeks before surgery with an
MRI scan of the patient’s knee, hip and ankle. Computer software is then used to create a 3D model that matches the orientation, size and dimensions of the patient’s knee. This
information allows for the manufacturing of customized cutting jigs which are used during the procedure. According to
Dr. Kayal, these customized tools fit perfectly onto the
patient’s knee and guide the surgeon as he or she removes
the precise amount of bone to accept the correctly sized
knee implant.
The technique also enables the surgeon to virtually correct
any misalignment before surgery and return the knee to its
pre-arthritic condition. Research has shown proper knee
alignment improves patient satisfaction and promotes joint
longevity.
An experienced surgeon can perform an excellent knee
replacement without patient specific instrumentation, and
the actual knee implants are the same high-quality parts
used in traditional knee replacement surgery. However, the
reported benefits of personalized knee replacement have
been encouraging, specifically: improved correction of the
deformity, more precise knee sizing, reduced surgical time,
less blood loss, fewer required instruments, and most importantly, a faster recovery.
Chilton Medical Center introduced Personalized Knee
Replacement to its growing list of orthopaedic services available in its Total Joint Center in February 2013, with Dr. Kayal
being the first to offer it to patients in Northern New
Jersey. Dr. Kayal also performs Personalized Knee
Replacements surgery at Hackensack University Medical
Center-Pascack Valley campus.
Dr. Kayal is a recipient of the 2013, 2014 and 2015 Patients
Choice Award from Vitals.com and the 2013, 2014 and 2015
Castle Connolly “Top Doctors” Award.
