THE BUZZ RISING STAR FENCING ACADEMY AT SPA 23 FENCING TO BE FIT Head fencing coach Genady (Gary) Dubrovich offers an exhilarating class in fencing technique at the RISING STAR FENCING ACADEMY AT SPA 23 (381 Route 23 South, Pompton Plains, 973-839-8823, www.spa23.com). Dubrovich, who has coached many students who’ve won local, regional and national titles, is still competitively active and has high ratings in all three of the sport’s weapons. According to Laura Belle, programs director at Spa 23, “In our classes, Coach Gary works on speed, agility, coordination, fencing technique and footwork. His world-class knowledge of classical and modern fencing technique has students competing on all levels.” Fencing works all muscles and provides a cardiovascular workout. Equipment is available for students ages 6 and older. TOP: THINKSTOCK; RIGHT: ANNE-MARIE CARUSO NEW PLAYS WELCOME Lifelong Wayne residents Robert Barwick and Michael Magenta pooled their artistic talents to entertain audiences with original works and founded GROUND LEVEL THEATRE (www.groundleveltheatre.com), where new plays are born. Friends for years, the two are motivated to help develop new actors, directors and playwrights, and are looking to produce new works by other local artists. Magenta is a playwright and artistic director, while Barwick is an actor and GLT's managing director. Both have established careers in event production and bring extensive theatre resumes to GLT. “Together, we have created a forum here that makes it easier for new playwrights, actors and directors to present their talent and work,” Magenta explains. In its first season, all plays performed by GLT were original one-act shows and full-length plays (non-musicals) authored by Magenta. “I write contemporary dialogue shows that are relatable to our adult audiences,” says Magenta. “Right now, we can’t be a place for musicals to grow, because it’s extremely costly, and choreography and music is not in our reach yet.” The company doesn't perform in any one location for all its shows. "We're always looking to bring our shows to local places," said Barwick. GLT rents different venues and produces under its own banner, Warehouse Stage. The company’s first production was in an actual warehouse on Riverview Drive in Wayne, and it has since performed at Wayne YMCA’s Rosen Theatre and at George Washington Middle School.
