Taste Talk: FOODIE FEATURE
up. Saturday and Sunday, all visitors of the Autumn
Treasures festival can have the chance to taste test all
different cuts of meat. Past competitors have prepared
pork butt, ribs, chicken, and beef brisket that they
serve at their restaurants in North Carolina. That
means you can have award-winning barbecue year-
round.
Last year’s Grand Champions, Redneck Scientific,
are famous for their fresh smoked, savory BBQ. Their
restaurant in Benson, North Carolina will close before
regular closing time once the fresh smoked pickin’s are
gone – so you better stop by early if you’re making a
trip east! We recommend a short trip to the Cook-off in
October to check it out first.
Jefferson Street Deli
By: Jess Bailey
End capping a gas station and convenience store,
Waxhaw’s newest resident, Jefferson Street Deli (@
JSDWaxhaw) is anything but ordinary – something ev-
ident from your very first order! Their sandwiches are
refreshingly different and abundantly delicious. Once
you’ve introduced yourself, they’ll treat you as family, a
core value they hold dear.
Owner Chris Wriggle opened the doors to this wel-
come lunch and dinner option in July, after helping
his father, Curtis Wriggle, establish their first loca-
tion in Monroe, back in June 2016. The culinary gift
runs deep in this family with a lifetime of experience,
ranging from opening and/or running the Charlotte
Knights Stadium, Firethorne Country Club restaurant,
Zebra Restaurant, New South Kitchen, Ilios Noches,
and many more!
The Jefferson Street Deli, named after their Jefferson
Street location in Monroe, has an eclectic offering
of sandwiches, loaded and topped high with local-
ly-sourced ingredients. Asked how they came up with
their concept for “bigger is better” sandwiches, Chris
tells, “Dad grew up on the Dagwood comic books…
about a chef making extraordinary sandwiches, over-
loading them really tall.”
Extraordinary sandwiches are exactly what you’ll get

from their most popular Philly Cheesesteak, which
has literally doubled the sales of every other sandwich
on the menu, to the always popular Sunset Boulevard
and the Cuban. They offer catering as well as deliv-
ery within a four-mile radius and a $15 minimum. In
addition, Chris aims for two special sandwiches each
day, using unexpected ingredients like fried calamari
to self-smoked, pulled pork.
Chris is excited to be in Waxhaw, and has felt the
support of both the Town and the community. For
Jefferson Street Deli, they’re a close-knit family that
works together, plays together and has fun. And like
the signage that adorns their wall, “Other things may
change us, but we start and end with family.”

an appetite. It’s a good
thing the festival is home
to the annual Grill’n and Chilli’n BBQ Cook-off, the
perfect opportunity to try some of the best barbecue in
the great state of North Carolina.
The Grill’n and Chill’n BBQ Cook-off will begin Fri-

A little closer to home, Carolina Smokin’ Johns BBQ
in Winston-Salem will have you hog wild over their
ribs. They’ve taken the grand prize in competitions all
over the state thanks to Pitmaster John Young. Young
taught cooking classes for the North Carolina Barbe-
cue Society, and he took classes himself when he first
entered the world of competition barbecues. With some
guidance and a little bit of secret sauce, you could be a
Pitmaster someday, too!
We might not get their secret recipes any time soon,
but you’ll find us hard at work tasting
