WA X H AW ’ S V I S ION Waxhaw is a friendly, vibrant, prosperous town where history and creativity build an enduring, safe and healthy community for people of all ages to live, learn, work, play or grow a business. TOWN MANAGER’S MESSAGE The holidays are an exciting time in Waxhaw. The season kicks off with our Holiday Festival of Lights where over 500,000 lights will illuminate our historic streetscape. Part of that streetscape, is Maxwell’s Tavern, which many may not know, was named after Gladys Kerr’s father who used to run a general store in that building. At the November 28th Board Meeting, we announced that Gladys Kerr, who was born and raised in Waxhaw, and recently named Union County woman of the year, will serve as the Grand Marshall of our 2017 Christmas Parade on December 10th. Gladys has been a wonderful contributor to our community; we are pleased to honor her in our annual parade. After an extensive search, we are also pleased to announce we have a new Finance Director, Lisa White who brings a wealth of municipal background experience having worked as a Finance Director in Mauldin, South Carolina; Greenwood County, South Carolina and most recently in Hendersonville, North Carolina. Learn more about Lisa on page 5. The November 28th meeting was a busy one. The President of South Piedmont Community College, Dr. Maria Pharr, proposed a feasibility study to determine if Waxhaw is a viable location for their new facility. Learn more about the study on pages 6 and 7. In early November, the municipal elections were held. Three new board members were elected. We will officially be welcoming Tracy Wesolek, Brenda McMillon and Kat Lee on December 12th when they will be sworn into office. Prior to welcoming our new commissioners on December 12th, we will have the opportunity to thank Mayor Pro Tem John Hunt, Commissioner James Warner and Commissioner Paul Fitzgerald for their dedicated service to the Town. Not only have these gentlemen served the citizens faithfully over the past four years as elected officials, but each served on various appointed Town Boards for years prior to becoming elected officials. Please join us on December 12th to thank our departing members and offer a warm welcome to our new Town Board. Greg Ferguson Greg Ferguson Town Manager [email protected]
