The Waxhaw Board of Commissioners conducted their regular meeting on Tuesday May 14, 2019.
• During the meeting the Board adopted a number of administrative changes designed to improve the service and efficiency of our
banking relationships. Along with the efficiency improvements, the town will realize an annual savings of $3,000.
• The Director of Parks and Recreation updated the Board on the final suggested changes to the draft Park and Recreation Master Plan.
The draft plan will be brought back to the Board for final deliberations and adoption in June.
• The Director of Engineering provided an update on 3 capital transportation projects underway – Kensington Drive, Downtown
sidewalks and Waxhaw Marvin sidewalks. These projects represent nearly $4.6M in capital improvements for Waxhaw.
Everyone attending the meeting had a chance to experience first-hand the meaning of community and of community involvement. After
welcoming Jeff Wells as Waxhaw’s new Planning Director, the Board presented the 2019 Waxhaw 101 class graduates with their completion
certificates. Gladys Kerr spoke for the class and shared with the Board her experiences and unique perspective of Waxhaw, both past and
present.
The meeting concluded with the reading an essay written by High School Senior Lauren Owen, entitled “The Value of Community.”
She began by sharing how “growing up in a small town, outside of the hustle and bustle of the city life has taught me one valuable lesson:
community matters.” She went on to describe a volunteer experience where Waxhaw came together to show a man and his family that they
were a part of a bigger family – Waxhaw. And what did she learn from this? “I learned that anyone can benefit from social connectedness
when they realize that every person lives a unique and unpredictable life. I learned that anyone can benefit from the help of others when
they are willing to be vulnerable and listen to the vulnerable. I learned that anyone can benefit from reaching out to neighbors and allowing
neighbors to reach out to them. I have learned that these things define community.”
Thank you, Lauren, for reminding all of us what community means and how lucky we all are to be a part of this great community of
Waxhaw.
Thank you to those that attended in person and to those that view via our Town YouTube Channel. If you have any additional questions
