Kevin Starnes
FIRE MARSHAL
When Kevin Starnes became the town’s first
full-time Fire Marshal in March this year, he
brought with him 18 years of experience in public
safety, and the distinction of Fire Marshal has
been a longtime goal for Kevin. “To be honest, I
wasn’t actively looking at changing career paths
at the time,” Kevin says of transitioning to work
for Waxhaw, “but when I found out that the
town… was searching for their first full time Fire
Marshal, I knew it was the perfect opportunity.”
Prior to joining the Town of Waxhaw staff Kevin
served over 13 years as a Fire Inspector for the City of Charlotte serving on
several specialized inspection teams, most recently a New Construction Fire
Inspector overseeing new buildings and upfits.
Since becoming Waxhaw’s Fire Marshal, Kevin has been busy with behind-
the-scenes work involved in reviewing town data, writing policies and
procedures, and making sure Town Hall is in full compliance with state fire
code regulations. All while conducting fire inspections throughout the town and
developing the town’s Fire Marshal office. “The most exciting part is having the
freedom and support to build and grow the Fire Marshal’s Office the way I see
fit. I have had full support from the town and fire department in getting the
program off the ground which has helped me tremendously,” Kevin said of his
new colleagues. Kevin noted that he looks forward to making his rounds with
local businesses to ensure that all buildings and businesses in the town are as
safe as possible.
A fire inspection is required by law in every occupancy with the exception of
single family homes. Kevin will inspect businesses in town according to the
North Carolina Fire Code. He will be walking through all parts of each building
during the inspection to document hazards, and will educate the business
owner or employee in ways to correct any hazards or violations found.
