Dear Waxhaw residents,
The Fourth of July fireworks display in Waxhaw has been a beloved tradition for many years. Over these
years, our town has grown tremendously and attracted thousands of visitors from all around Union
County and the greater Charlotte area. We are so grateful for all our residents who call Waxhaw their
home, and our neighbors who choose our town as their destination for holidays with their families. The
attendance has grown so large that the Independence Day Celebration with parade, beach party, concert
and fireworks is an all-hands-on-deck event for all our Parks & Recreation staff, Public Services staff,
police officers and volunteer firefighters to manage the traffic and be on site in case of an emergency.
At its current location, we became concerned for the safety of our residents that emergency personnel
may be prevented from reaching emergency incidents both in and outside the festival area. The decision
was made by the Board of Commissioners on November 13, 2018, to cancel the fireworks display until a
more suitable location for the size of the event this has grown into can be found.
We understand the disappointment that the fireworks display will no longer be a part of Waxhaw’s
events. We hope you will still join us in celebrating the Fourth of July and Waxhaw’s 130th birthday
at our parade at 10 AM in downtown Waxhaw. Dozens of local businesses, organizations, and citizens
participate in this patriotic celebration every year, and it’s a wonderful kick-off to a beautiful summer
day.
You can still enjoy a beautiful and patriotic evening with your family at one of our neighboring fireworks
displays. Many of these displays are accompanied by other attractions and activities.
