Waxhaw is a friendly, vibrant, prosperous town where history and creativity build an
enduring, safe and healthy community for people of all ages to live, learn, work, play or
grow a business.
TOWN MANAGER’S MESSAGE
There’s no doubt we have a lot happening in our town. It’s critical for us to work together and
communicate often. ‘Waxhaw Happenings’ aims to communicate “what’s happening” on a monthly
basis internally from the Town of Waxhaw.
Because the town’s fiscal year began on July 1st, in June we completed the review and adoption of
the 2017/2018 budget. The complete budget is available for viewing online. This year we were able
to maintain the tax rate at 36 cents while continuing to provide the level of services you’ve come
to expect. We have funds dedicated to the TAP grant pedestrian project; which will ultimately
improve walkability and street light enhancements in downtown.
I learned early on that we have passionate residents who care deeply about Waxhaw’s heritage.
Attending my first Waxhaw Independence Day Celebrations this past week, I was in awe with
the level of community pride and engagement paying homage to that heritage. With thousands of
visitors and various moving parts, it took a host of staff and volunteers to pull off an event of that
caliber. I encourage you to participate in opportunities the town extends and get to know those
who serve our community to deliver the Waxhaw experience.
Our Parks & Recreation Department, which is instrumental in delivering on the Waxhaw
experience, recently welcomed a new Director, Dena Sabinske. As a former Parks & Recreations
Director of Stallings, NC, Dena brings a breadth of knowledge and she is eager to get started.
Learn more about Dena on page 3.
It has been a pleasure to get to know the staff and various members of our community over the last
few months. I look forward to continuing to work with all of you to fulfill the Waxhaw vision.
