M AYO R ’ S R E CA P : J A N. 8 T H B O C M E E T I N G On Tuesday, January 08, the Waxhaw Board of Commissioners held its initial meeting of 2019. The meeting began with a focus on public safety: • • The Town of Waxhaw, Union County Public Schools and the Union County Sheriff’s office have been awarded a Grant from the US Department of Justice to enhance the safety and support of our schools and school children. As part of the North Carolina School Prevention Program, the grant award and match will specifically enable our Waxhaw Police Department to enhance our simulator system and thus improve our response to any public safety calls in the school system. Mr. Michael James, from Union County, presented to the Board information on possible ways to better fund fire services in the County, including the Waxhaw Volunteer Fire Department. The Town Board will work with the Waxhaw VFD to determine which solutions best serve Waxhaw. Shifting to transportation, the Board of Commissioners adopted the Waxhaw Marvin Road Corridor Study. This study was initiated a year ago to identify transportation needs and issues along the corridor. The study produced a number of recommendations and guidance that will enable Waxhaw to make more informed decisions regarding future travel and development in the area. The Board also received the following reports: • • The Town Manager provided an update on our park improvement investment projects at the Skate Park, Nesbit Park and Town Creek Park, along with a calendar of upcoming events hosted by our Events Team. The Mayor provided a recap regarding issues raised on Town legal fees. The meeting concluded with an update on the YMCA Waxhaw project. The Town of Waxhaw and the YMCA of Greater Charlotte met recently to discuss the status of the “YMCA Waxhaw Project”. At that meeting both parties agreed upon a number of actions designed to move the project forward as well as a shared commitment to quickly improve the quality of life for Waxhaw residents.
