Waxhaw is a friendly, vibrant, prosperous town where history and creativity build an
enduring, safe and healthy community for people of all ages to live, learn, work, play or
grow a business.
MAYOR’S MESSAGE
As our rapidly growing town approaches a population of 20,000 residents, your Waxhaw team
continues to focus on the vision of Waxhaw life and the friendly, safe, quality of life community
that is Waxhaw. The demands continue to change and grow for our core town services such as
police, solid waste, better and improved transportation systems; and a need for more quality of life
amenities such as parks, greenways, facilities, and leisure programs. Just as quickly as we changed
from spring to summer, in a few short months we will change to fall, and this changing of the seasons
remind us that change is constant.
As I walk and drive around our town, I am always reminded of the teamwork and change happening
behind the scenes to make sure Waxhaw continues to move forward. And Team Waxhaw is working
hard to meet demands change is bringing. In June the Board adopted our annual budget for the fiscal
year. This culminated a Team Waxhaw work effort that began in December to ensure we address
needs in all these areas, all while keeping our town moving forward and keeping our tax rate low.
July began the season of street maintenance and improvements with work underway in all corners
of the town. The town also moved to the next phase of our project development of town owned real
estate downtown. The end of July brings two new additions to town government. Candace DeFinis
has been appointed to fill the vacant seat on the Waxhaw Town Board, and Erskine Smith has been
appointed Interim Town Manager to lead and guide our operations that include over 40 services and
functions. August will begin with our participation in National Night Out (Aug. 6) as well as Back
to School Bash (Aug. 17) before we launch into the fall and our season of community wide seasonal
events.
Often the challenges of change we face seem daunting. What we do with our collective time and
talent, and how we effect change, is up to each of us and will continue to define Waxhaw life.
Waxhaw’s success I believe lies in a core belief in service, civility, and in community. And I am
confident that by working together, we’ll be ready for whatever changes the next seasons may bring.
It truly is an honor to serve Waxhaw as Mayor. I look forward to seeing each of you out and about!
