CLASS IS IN SESSION
This February, Waxhaw staff debuted their civic educational program, Waxhaw 101. The
program was designed to introduce residents to the staff members in our local government,
and highlight what goes on in the various departments. Waxhaw 101 is comprised of eight
sessions, and the “students” in the class are a group of fifteen Waxhaw residents from various
backgrounds and interests.
Each of the eight sessions covers a different department or group of departments, including
Parks & Recreation, Communications, Development Services, and Finance, just to name a
few. The staff in each department present to the class, and residents are encouraged to ask
questions. This is perhaps the most important component of the program; Waxhaw 101 has
provided an opportunity for residents to connect directly with staff to address their questions
and concerns.
From the staff’s perspective, each session has been engaging, and staff have enjoyed getting to
know the group and address their concerns in this conversational setting. The class has found
the sessions to be informative and engaging as well and have walked away from each session
content that their questions were answered.
