GREAT TEACHING

What makes a great teacher ?. It's a question I'm frequently asked, and when I give the answer, some are surprised that it's not as complicated as they first thought. In fact, although they don't realise it, hairdressers, beauticians and makeup artists are probably half way there already.

Let me explain. Just stop a minute and think of a time when you experienced a great teaching or training session. What was it about the trainer that made it great ?.

Well they were probably well organised, they probably made you feel welcome, they probably had good presentation skills, they probably presented the information in a logical manner,

one of the vital aspects in educating others, and so were able to get their point across..

Well guess what, if you are a hairdresser, beauty therapist or makeup artist then you are probably demonstrating these skills already. Heres how.

Organisational Skills

As a therapist, stylist or makeup artist you have to be organised. You organise work schedules, you organise your workstation, you organise your tools and you organise your work life. Organisational skills are ingrained in you.

Making Others Feel Welcome

You do it every day with your clients. If you didn't you would be out of business. You greet them, you smile, you make them feel relaxed and comfortable. Everything that great teachers do.

Presentation skills

You are presenting every day in your career. You will probably have to show a client a product or educate them on a product, makeup look or hairstyle. You will probably be multi tasking while doing this. Its similar to how teachers present except they might use different methods to present their information eg, visual aids. Sure anyone can learn to use visual aids.

Planning.

Planning is something you do without even realising it. You have to plan your day, you plan your work scheduale, you have to plan the service you deliver and what you need to do when you finish. Planning is an integral part of what you do, and your doing it every day..

Good Communications Skills

You are communicating everyday with clients. You talk to them, you listen to what they are telling you, you probably have to communicate with work colleagues, and most importantly, you are probably communicating with clients to educate them on some aspect of their skin, hair or makeup. Or if you’re a manager or assistant manager you will probably have to communicate with new or existing staff to train or educate them. Sure isn’t that what teaching is all about. Educating others.

So don’t underestimate your ability to become a great teacher, your probably half way there already.
