Robert Andrew (“Bob”) Taylor, passed away on January 9, 2018, leaving the JU campus, and others that he attended over the years, forever changed. Taylor was a forerunner and positive force in helping shape the University into the multicultural, inclusive, international campus it is today. It is important to note that he may not have had the opportunity to create powerful change at Jacksonville University if not for the events of May 9, 1963, when our Board of Trustees took a momentous vote for that era and this region: to integrate. Four months later, three transfer students, including Mr. Taylor, became the first African-American students enrolled at JU. His first day attending classes was September 3, 1963. Through hard work, courage, and determination, Mr. Taylor and others were integral to fostering racial equality and diversity on this campus. Within seven years of his matriculation, JU’s first integrated men’s basketball team embarked on an unforgettable 1969-70 season, which led to the NCAA Championship game and positive, national exposure for the team that championed healing and acceptance in a time of war, strife, and uncertainty. While studying at JU, he stood out as a campus leader - during his tenure he was president of the student government as well as his fraternity, and director of Intramural Sports. As a professional, he helped several fellow alumni get their first jobs with PLS Logistics and Prudential. Stephen's shining spirit will truly be missed within the JU and Jacksonville Community. Dr. Ted Tipton Allen, Professor Emeritus of Biology, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2018 after a short but hard-fought illness. A 47-year veteran of Jacksonville University, Dr. Allen is fondly remembered. Dr. Allen joined the JU faculty in 1961. His profound and undeniable love of science and teaching impacted countless students and colleagues. From his early morning bird walks across campus each day, to his ever-popular intro biology course, to his tireless efforts in co-founding Tree Hill Nature Center, Allen is the inspiration behind many a well-told story. His accolades are many, including 1970-71 Professor of the Year, the City of Jacksonville 1979 Lee and Mimi Adams Environmental Award, and the 1989-90 Sears-Roebuck Foundation Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award. During her 13 years at JU, she served as Professor of Dance and Director of Dance Studies, and Chair of the Division of Art, Theatre and Dance. She was instrumental in the construction of the Alexander Brest Dance Pavilion, as well as charter membership with the National Association of Schools of Dance. She was named a Professor Emerita at Jacksonville University in 2007.
