IN MEMORIAM
ALUMNI
Marjorie Holt '45, Maryland's first Republican
congresswoman, died on January 6, 2018 at the
age of 97 at her home in Severna Park, MD.
Shirley Haynie Macklin '60/'68 passed away
on November 18, 2017. Shirley graduated
Magna Cum Laude from JU with a BA degree
in English in 1960, and she returned to earn an
MA in Teaching in 1968. In addition, she was
a class leader and a constant JU supporter
throughout the years.
She taught in various school systems, including
Duval County in Jacksonville, FL and Bibb
County in Macon, GA, where she served for
26 years. Shirley received numerous awards
during her career. She was an educator who
deeply appreciated her students and was able
to connect with them through her love of English
Literature. She is survived by her husband of 57
years, Jim Macklin '60.
Robert Andrew (“Bob”) Taylor, passed away
on January 9, 2018, leaving the JU campus,
and others that he attended over the years,
forever changed. Taylor was a forerunner and
positive force in helping shape the University
into the multicultural, inclusive, international
campus it is today.
It is important to note that he may not have had
the opportunity to create powerful change at
Jacksonville University if not for the events of
May 9, 1963, when our Board of Trustees took
a momentous vote for that era and this region:
to integrate. Four months later, three transfer
students, including Mr. Taylor, became the first
African-American students enrolled at JU.
His first day attending classes was September
3, 1963. Through hard work, courage, and
determination, Mr. Taylor and others were
integral to fostering racial equality and
diversity on this campus. Within seven years
of his matriculation, JU’s first integrated men’s
basketball team embarked on an unforgettable
1969-70 season, which led to the NCAA
Championship game and positive, national
exposure for the team that championed
healing and acceptance in a time of war, strife,
and uncertainty.
