he event was sponsored by the DST, the
South African Local Government Association
(SALGA), the Water Research Commission
(WRC), and Hitachi, with a message of support
from the Embassy of Japan. The programme
director/facilitator was Dr Henry Roman, acting
chief director: sector innovation and green
economy at the DST.
Muzi Chonco, head of environmental
management and water risks at AB Inbev,
delivered an interesting keynote address where
he emphasised the private-public partnership
(PPP) role needed to harness water and
sanitation. Each of the beneficiaries delivered a
brief on their engineering ideas, which was well
received by the audience.
The seminar ended with panel members
providing insight into the new skills technology
and the need to draw from their experiences of
the veterans in the field. At the same time, it was
essential to ‘allow young minds to flourish.’
The seminar was closed with a brief
message from the branch representative of
Hitachi Europe and William Moraka of SALGA.
