Loss of water is something that an arid country such as South Africa
can ill afford. Municipalities are increasingly urged to find ways and
methodologies to counter the effects of climate and usage, and to enhance
water recycling and water treatment technologies. Part 2 of the Report to

Water, the most valuable resource
14 Infrastructure
Water focus; a priority
South Africa’s water infrastructure is overloaded, owing mainly to the
flood of people migrating to urban areas. Deteriorating municipal water
treatment infrastructure is also a concern, brought about largely by a lack
of coordination between government departments.
16 Environment
Groundwater as an option
Water supply is severely under scrutiny as South Africa recovers from
the aftermath of terrible droughts while attempting to meet ever-growing
demand.
Raising groundwater’s profile
Two-thirds of South Africa’s surface area is largely reliant on groundwater,
owing mainly to the dearth of perennial streams in the semi-desert to
desert parts, where groundwater is more valuable than gold.
20 Debate
Ignore the water crisis at your peril
While the maintenance and development of infrastructure are essential
elements of addressing South Africa’s water scarcity issues, changing
peoples’ attitude to water usage and effectively managing the demand for
water are equally critical.
22 Industry
Taking water security to another level
Water security doesn’t only mean availability, but also whether the
multitude of treatment plants throughout the country are at risk of being
cyber hacked …
