SEPTIC CONVERSION PROGRAM
Because of the City ’ s Septic to Sewer program , since 1999 , more than 20 billion gallons have been diverted from the North Fork of the St . Lucie River , part of a unique aquatic preserve and estuary . The St . Lucie River Estuary is part of the larger Indian River Lagoon System , the most diverse estuarine environment in North America .
More than 2 million pounds of nitrogen has been eliminated from entering surface water bodies – helping prevent pollution and potential algal blooms – since the removal and prevention of septic tanks .
