Joe Thompson The 51 Fifty Sponsored 1976 Car, driven by Brendon Thompson and Brother Joe as his Co-Driver, was off to a good start. Qualifying had went smoothly. Fresh off of a one year build, this Thompson Brothers Chassis was on it’s “shake down” also known as the Qualifying lap of the Race. Everything checked out when they did the prerace check before the next Morning. The Start came off with out a hitch, Brendon & Joe running a respectable Race, they were about 40 miles into the Course. After a stop at the remore Pit, they were about 28 miles out from it when, the Transmission just quit, went cold Turkey. The gears were gone. They then turned the rig around and began the trek to the Main pit to get a transmission swapped into the Car so they could finish. 3 Miles from the Pit Reverse gear was gone. The problem for the transmission failure was self inflicted, during the build Brendon used the wrong fitting for the transmission fluid, starving the unit until it just “melted” . In speaking with Brendon, “That was an expensive mistake and I don’t have anybody to blame, because I did it”. Their Race was done and were towed back to camp, by an ATV.
