Type of Waste X-Ray Fixer Waste
Disposal Method
X-Ray fixer waste contains high silver content and will most likely constitute hazardous waste, however fixer is readily recyclable. Recycling is the waste management method recommended by both PDA and regulatory agencies.
There are two suitable methods of recycling fixer waste: 1) using a silver recovery unit for your developing system 2) using a licensed silver recycler.
If you use your own recovery unit, liquid that is run through the unit usually can be disposed of down the drain into the public sewer system. This should be confirmed with your local sewage treatment plant or municipality.
If you choose to use a licensed silver recycler, the used fixer should be collected and stored in a closed plastic container labeled“ Used Fixer.”
X-Ray Developer / Fixer Mixtures
Mixed developer and fixer solutions will either need to be recycled by a licensed silver recycler or disposed of as hazardous waste. If recycling, the mixture should be collected and stored in a closed plastic container labeled“ Used Fixer and Developer.”
You may also purchase an adapter kit for your silver recovery unit to keep the solutions separate.
