with America’ s history.
As years went by, Washington Trust remained a source of strength and stability for our customers as we continued to grow to meet the needs of our communities.
In 1931, we added a loan department to provide mortgage lending. In 1960, we introduced the convenience of drive-up banking. As technology began to develop, we found new ways to help our customers manage their finances. In 1985, we installed our first Washington Trust ATM. We named it“ Martha,” after Martha Washington.
1931
As Washington Trust neared its 200 th year in 2000, we opened branches in Connecticut and expanded our branch network north of South County with offices in North Kingstown, Providence, Warwick, and Cranston. When the internet was introduced, we launched our first website and then online banking soon after.

Additional branches were then added each year to offer customers more convenience and to support new communities throughout Rhode Island. We also expanded our wealth management and mortgage services with offices in Connecticut and Massachusetts.
Most recently, Washington Trust has expanded into the East Bay and northern region of Rhode Island, with branches in Barrington, Cumberland, and Smithfield, and opened a fully bilingual branch in the Olneyville neighborhood of Providence.
