often. You all need to come to the table with us to figure out how to provide more real-world experiences for our students, while they are still students. They have to graduate having been in a real work experience.
What would most people be surprised to learn about you?
Cantwell: My first, second, third, fourth and fifth thing are the five children that I raised. I do get asked a lot by students, how did you do all those other things and that? And the answer is always one day at a time. My children lift me up every day, every single day, so I think that was a viable number of years of treading water with my nose barely above the water line.
Jones: Two things. One would be the fact that concurrent with a 34-and-ahalf-year career at the University of Illinois, I also sang professionally and have been awarded, along with the group that I sang with, two Grammys, two gold records and one platinum. The second piece is that being a son of sharecroppers from Southwestern Georgia, I had to create innovative ways to pay for my undergraduate degree, and so I worked both as a meat cutter at Piggly Wiggly Southern in Fort Valley, Georgia, and on the weekends, I was an occasional assistant funeral director. I would tell you, those are two professions you don’ t want to get confused.
