washington business The Puget Sound Energy Foundation is helping Washingtonians become better prepared for the next emergency. The foundation awarded 38 grants last year to a variety of community groups, from the Pierce County Search and Rescue 4x4 Unit to Mary’s Place and the Olympic College Foundation. The funds will be used to purchase generators for emergency shelters, emergency lighting at hospitals and better radio communications for medical centers, for example. “Any nonprofit can apply, but grants are focused solely on keeping our communities safe and prepared — especially as the region the foundation services faces threats from wind, floods, snow, earthquakes, forest fires and more,” foundation officials said in a news release. The grants total up to $1 million per year, and include employee and retiree matching funds. Visit www.psefoundation.org for more information. Snake River Dam Advocates Launch New Website to Tell Their Story Marci Green’s family has farmed the Palouse region of Eastern Washington since 1878. It’s a region that benefits greatly from the four Lower Snake River Dams that provide clean power to Washington businesses, barge transport to get crops to market, and water for irrigation. Green and others are featured in the Faces of the Snake River website, which is a project of the Pacific Northwest Waterways Association. “This project is dedicated to bringing attention to the stories of the rural communities that live and work on the Snake River,” website authors write. Green’s family is among those stories. They raise wheat near Fairfield, south of Spokane near the Idaho border. “This farm has been in my family since 1878,” Green said. “It’s important to us that we are able to sustain that. It’s something we’re always conscious of. We want to take care of this earth we live on, to be good stewards of the land and air and water.” Visit www.snakeriverfaces.com to learn more and get involved.
