The Water Cooler
“The Seattle Glacier Clams are nearing reality.”
— Seattle sports commentator Art Thiel, joking about news that the National Hockey League moved forward toward a vote on
expanding into Seattle. Actual names being considered for the expansion hockey team include the Sockeyes and the Totems.
“We don’t want anyone getting
hangry during our discussion of
the Lower Snake River Dams.”
— A moderator at the Oct. 18, 2018, meeting of the
Southern Resident Killer Whale Task Force in Lacey,
inviting participants to enjoy several dozen donuts
that were delivered to the group. AWB Vice President,
Government Affairs, Gary Chandler is the business
community’s representative on the group, and is a strong
voice opposing any breaching of the Columbia-Snake
River Dams.

“You lacked style but gave us smiles
With mountains and sea views.
O, Viaduct, you’re outta luck.
We put you up, we let you down...”
— Brangien Davis, of Seattle-based band The Argument, in a
melancholy musical ode to the Alaskan Way Viaduct, set to be fully
decommissioned in January and completely torn down by the end
of 2019. Although it is often decried for its “brutalist” 1950s design,
the viaduct also offers stunning views of the Olympic Mountains
and Puget Sound from its seafront expanse through downtown
Seattle that won’t be available in its replacement tunnel.
