Boeing and Alaska Airlines Lauded for Environmental Leadership
Two staples of Washington state ’ s economy , Boeing and Alaska Airlines , were highlighted in a report last fall titled , “ Bright Green in an Emerald City ,” for their efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through more precise and direct routing through satellite-based , rather than groundbased navigation .
The report was compiled by the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce , which found that carbon emissions reductions from each of the efficiently-routed flights equaled what a small car would emit driving from Seattle to Minneapolis , the Puget Sound Business Journal reports .
In addition , the chamber ’ s report also highlighted Alaska Air ’ s weight reductions . A simple change from glass beer bottles to cans lowered fuel consumption by 1,000 gallons .
The companies ’ efforts are on top of their partnership with the Port of Seattle to supply sustainable aviation biofuels to reduce carbon emissions in Washington state and around the world .
Other employers that contributed to the report include Amazon , Microsoft , The Nature Conservancy , NBBJ , Nucor , Puget Sound Energy , Starbucks , Touchstone , the University of Washington , Virginia Mason and Weyerhaeuser .
