washington business From You to Us Thanks from Poland! I’ve just received Washington Business [Fall 2011] from you. Excellent summary of what we did together and also a nice tool to convince unconvinced before next edition in Gdansk, Boleslawowo and, hopefully, Gdynia. Thank you. Piotr Grodzki, President SPEEDNET, Gdynia, Poland Kimberly-Clark Mill Closure Heartfelt Thank You Regarding your e-mail about the closure of the [Everett] Kimberly-Clark pulp and paper facility because talks to sell the plants have failed over environmental issues, as always you hit the nail on the head. It is a crying shame, as you say. What is most frustrating to me is that as I visit with lawmakers about public policy and equal treatment of business, I have had a number of them tell me that it is their job to pick winners and losers, yet they are the first ones to blame others when their policies fail. Keep up the good fight. On behalf of the Thurston County Fire District #6 Firefighters’ Association, please accept a huge heartfelt “thank you” to the Association of Washington Business. The generous donation of $1,000 will provide a very happy holiday for seven less fortunate families including 27 children in Thurston County. Our Firefighters’ Association has done a tremendous job over the years to make sure its adopt-a-family program is successful and therefore this gift is truly appreciated, especially during these distressed economic times. Please share our appreciation with your AWB members for making these funds available. Steve Gano Lakewood Sincerely, East Olympia Fire District #6 Thurston County Fire District #6 Impressed and Concerned Magazine Reader I just finished reading the Fall edition of Washington Business, very impressive the level of activities going on within the AWB. As someone who has great love & concern for this state, I look forward next year to being more involved. Never hesitate to call if I can be of service. Melvin D. Low, Fire Chief Olympia Responses to a Nov. 4 column, “GPS needs to control our skies, too,” by AWB President Don Brunell. Air Traffic Control Improvements Needed Great columns you send once and a while! Keep it up. You wrote a great column on a sorely needed improvement to the ATC (Air Traffic Control) system. We have been attending FAA committee meetings in D.C. for years on this subject, hoping that somehow NextGen will make it through the funding process. Meanwhile the costs to implement keep escalating. The airlines are doing what they can to move forward unilaterally, but it’s difficult to jump half-way into the pool on this. Patty Murray has been one of the biggest supporters. Count me as ever hopeful ... and yet, China will probably leap-frog us at some point and force our hand … anyway, great column. Harrison Schmitt, Ph.D., Apollo 17 Astronaut Silver City, NM David Brukardt, Past AWB Chair Spokane Cary Bozeman, former CEO Port of Bremerton Enjoy Your Columns Editor’s note: Harrison Schmitt is one of the last two astronauts to walk on the moon. He has served as a guest speaker for AWB in 1997 and 2009, and corresponds with us on science and energy issues. 6 association of washington business
