“With unemployment near 9 percent and a demand for manufacturing
industry workers, the ability to transport state-of-the-art training
equipment to the high school or college campus and the worksite
provides a training advantage for more workers, and a well-trained
workforce for business,” said Amy Johnson of the AWB Institute.
Because the classroom comes to employers, it can also eliminate
the need to shut down a production line. One group of workers can
receive training inside the trailer while regular work continues on
machinery at the worksite.
Melanie Wimmenauer, senior director of communications at
The Lighthouse for the Blind, said the mobile training unit could be
useful for her organization’s machinists, who make parts for Boeing
and other aerospace companies. It would, for example, eliminate the
need for sight-impaired workers to navigate the bus system in order
to get to a training site.
