“Head, shoulders, knees and toes tax:
This revenue source comes with a catchy
jingle. And for those who think Seattle
government costs an arm and a leg, we say:
Why stop there?”
— The News Tribune Editorial Board, May 21, in a tongue-and-cheek article
with suggestions of “five more taxes for Seattle to fall in love with”
“These chicken feathers not only crossed the
road, they blocked it!”
— Theron Zahn of KOMO television, reporting on a semi crash on May 23
that spilled 40,000 pounds of freshly plucked chicken feathers across I-5 in

“She will be a good
caretaker... Oprah knows
how to take care of a place
like this.”
— Kathleen Dickinson McDowell, after selling
her 43-acre waterfront estate on Orcas Island
to Oprah Winfrey for $8.3 million. Winfrey
bought the property sight-unseen as an
investment, but is expected to spend at least
a couple weeks a year at the site. Known as
“Madroneagle,” the estate has a half mile
of waterfront, a glass-walled gazebo, a wine
cellar, and a two-story wood- and stone-lined
great room.
