Some other things that have been critical for us , we have made it plain that the next generation doesn ’ t get automatically included in the business . They have to get a bachelor ’ s degree or some equivalent kind of certification , and they have to work elsewhere for a few years . Then you have to understand that your employment is dependent on your performance and on the needs of the business .
And the other thing is we , for about the last 40 , probably 45 years , have been very transparent in our business succession planning with a board that ’ s made up of outside board members and family members . And we ’ ve been very transparent in our estate planning .
What ’ s something you ’ ve learned in your time in the Legislature or taken from politics back into the business world ?
When you ’ re selling a brand , it ’ s so much like politics . People are voting with their dollars because they agree with your values or they share your values . In both cases it ’ s really , really important that you honor their values because you ’ re taking their money . The only way to be successful is to be authentic about that .
I think Wilcox Farms values have been care for the environment and support for the idea that families can still be successful in business and food .
Speaking of Wilcox eggs , what ’ s your favorite way to prepare an egg for breakfast ?
Who doesn ’ t like bacon and eggs or sausage and eggs ? I really like putting poached eggs on smoked salmon . And there ’ s a really good poached egg caprese that I like to do . And then there ’ s omelets ...
