KEVIN HARRIS Account Executive 253.393.2302 kevinh @ printnw . net it ’ s folks who are embedded in their career already . So maybe you ’ ve been working in construction . And let ’ s say you ’ ve been doing that for 20 years , and then you realize “ I want to get into management . But I need a credential to do that .” Let me look at a Bachelor of Applied Management degree . I think that ’ s a good example . Somebody who ’ s in their field who ’ s looking to move up in their particular industry , who maybe checks out our Bachelor of Applied Science degrees .
How do we better get the word out about your programs ? In particular , how do we show high-school students college can mean more than a four-year degree ?
I think we do need a campaign in our state to help people understand that the programs are out there , and also to destigmatize them a little bit . They shouldn ’ t be seen as lesser than ( four-year degrees ); they should be seen as equal to .
I think what we need is more career-connected learning in high school . And I think if we expose people early on to these type of programs , they ’ re more likely to be engaged and pursue them . Because you don ’ t know what you don ’ t know .
I think this is part of why there ’ s a lot of skepticism right now about the value of college … They think college only means the University of Washington or Washington State University — great , amazing options . But to help people understand you have this amazing menu : you could pursue an apprenticeship program , you could pursue a technical program , you could pursue a six-month certificate .
It ’ s easy , especially when you ’ re younger , to feel overwhelmed by all of that . I ’ m a first-generation college graduate — my parents never went to college and were immigrants . No one talked to me about that . So if you don ’ t have anyone who ’ s giving you that mentoring , that career advising , it ’ s easy to just slip through the cracks .
And so I think our challenge is higher ed leaders is to help students understand you can do all of these things . You can go to school part-time , you can take classes online . Do what works for you , given your life situation .
Anything else you would like to add ?
I really believe in the value of the employer voice and really want to continue to engage with the employer community . Because that helps me to be better . So I encourage anybody to reach out to my team or I and to partner to see how we can meet the needs of Washington businesses .
