a world of possibilities
Over in the mechatronics lab , students can get a certification to operate FANUC robots , the kind used in many warehouses and production facilities . From hydraulics and electronics to pneumatics and programming , students learn how , “ if something goes wrong , to repair it ,” said instructor Robert White . “ You need zero experience or exposure to robotics or any of this . I will meet you where you ’ re at .”
Nearby , Chris Loonstyn was setting up programs for the welding robot . After a year in EvCC ’ s welding program , he was moving into AMTEC ’ s advanced manufacturing programs . He sees the training as a way to prepare for positions opening up as the Navy expands or be able to handle high-tech jobs in the private sector .
“ Learning how to work on robots seems pretty smart ,” he said , noting that the AMTEC degrees all have overlaps — he can study composites while training on welding and getting robotics certifications . “ The teachers really encourage you to check out the other programs to see if you want to branch out .”

Students from AMTEC competed this year in the fourth Clash of the Trades , a reality show-style competition culminating at the Stewart-Haas racetrack in North Carolina . In a half hour episode broadcast in August , the team came in fourth in the nation in a competition .
By making it to the finals , the AMTEC team finished among the top four of 80 competing schools , from among 31 American states and two Canadian provinces .
Their entry into the contest was a trophy they designed and built : a detailed model of the Stewart Haas speedway in Charlotte , machined from a solid block of aluminum and decorated with the Clash of the Trades logo and a checkered flag .
“ Their dedication , skill , and passion embody the spirit of excellence that defines EvCC ’ s commitment to fostering talent and innovation in advanced manufacturing ,” Everett Community College president Chemene Crawford said .
The team members were Ryan Bucciantini , who was general manager in charge of quality assurance ; Leeann Riggs , who specialized in setup and work on the Computer Numerical Control ( CNC ) machines ; and River Stormo , who took the lead on Computer Aided Design ( CAD ). They worked under the coaching of machining instructor Darin Chase . fall 2024 47
