What ’ s Ahead
Past is Prologue
Jason Hagey , Executive Editor
While researching this edition ’ s cover story on the future of the Snake River dams , contributing writer Richard Davis started by looking at their past . By digging into the digital archives of the Tri-City Herald , Davis discovered that the current controversy about breaching the dams isn ’ t new . From the start , there were naysayers who objected to the dams for one reason or another .
But there were also visionary leaders who knew the value the dams would bring to the Pacific Northwest — leaders like Gov . Al Rosellini and Sen . Warren Magnuson , who are both quoted in the cover story that begins on page 28 .
Decades later , it ’ s hard to imagine a future without the Columbia and Snake river dams . Our economy certainly would not be what it is today without them . Now , as Washington considers its energy future , it ’ s worth remembering the effort that went before and what it took to get here .
Incidentally , Davis ’ s research introduced me to newspapers . com , a website that contains vast archives of hundreds of newspapers going back decades . For someone who enjoys history , this discovery is somewhat dangerous . When I worked at the Tri-City Herald years ago , I loved it when I had a good excuse to peruse the paper ’ s “ morgue ” files . Knowing it ’ s all available online is as tempting as any algorithm TikTok can throw at me .
Students of history will enjoy the story about Dancing Goats Coffee ( page 34 ) that begins by explaining the 1,200-year-old origins of the company ’ s name . I won ’ t spoil it here , so be sure to page ahead and check out the article from Emily Trivison . In addition to explaining the name , the article reveals how the company is benefiting from AWB ’ s CompWise program .
Emily was the AWB communications ’ team first intern , and she not only did a fantastic job with the Dancing Goats Coffee article , but she also brought her talents to AWB ’ s social media accounts , assisted with video production and livened up our department .
Finally , as we head into the fall and the annul October focus on manufacturing , it ’ s worth checking out this issue ’ s In Their Words , which features an interview with Steve Wright , the former administrator of the Bonneville Power Administration and head of the Chelan County Public Utility District ( page 18 ).
Wright not only has a lot of interesting perspectives on hydropower , but he ’ s also the guy who welcomed the AWB bus to the Rocky Reach Dam last year and even let us drive across it . We probably can ’ t top that this year , but we ’ ll try .
