Through the provision of sport, recreation and cultural leadership
opportunities, we endeavor to support stronger engagement in the
education system for indigenous youth living in remote areas.
About us
Wanta Aboriginal Corporation tackles the significant gap in education outcomes between
Indigenous and non-Indigenous students.
The Wanta Academy program was established in October 2013 with the first Academy
opening in the remote community of Yuendumu in Central Australia. As a result of the
success of the Yuendumu academy, Wanta has opened a further seven Academies spread
throughout the Northern Territory in the communities of Ntaria, Arlparra, Lajamanu,
Kalkaringi, Papunya, Ngukurr and Gapuwiyak. Our staff work with upper primary and
secondary students to increase school attendance and improve educational outcomes and
youth transition to vocational opportunities. Our Academies work to increase school
attendance and engagement through the provision of sport, recreation and cultural
activities.
Wanta also manages three Remote Schools Attendance Strategies (RSAS) in Yuendumu,
Papunya and Ntaria in Central Australia. The RSAS program is a Federally funded initiative
that engages local staff to work with schools, families, parents, and community
organisations to ensure all children go to school every day.
The Wanta Academies provide countless benefits to the students and communities we
work with. Our staff work tirelessly in challenging situations to ensure that:
• School attendance in remote communities increases.
• Students have clear pathways to employment by providing links to vocational
education opportunities.
• Various sport and recreation opportunities are provided to encourage a healthy
lifestyle and a safer community.
• We create local indigenous employment through our programs and nurture our staff
to reach their full potential
