HOW LONG DID YOU TEACH AT UF? WHAT IS YOUR AREA OF EXPERTISE? I taught at UF in the history department for 35 years, from 1978. I came in as a German historian and in the 1990s developed an interest in the Holocaust. This was prompted by a Holocaust survivor in Chicago who was the head of the Holocaust Education Foundation and invited me to develop a course. That kind of snowballed into my leading a group of 40 faculty members and graduate students on a trip which explored some of the Holocaust sites in Poland. This was somewhat of a life-changing experience for all of us because the survivor from Chicago opened up about his experiences while we were at Auschwitz and revealed some things that he had never shared even with his family before. From there I started teaching Holocaust courses at UF. I quickly found that the demand was huge as the course rose from 50 students to 180 within a few semesters. Wanderlust. 22
