SETTING UP
¬ ¬ Use a book about Frida Kahlo as reference or do some internet research , using the safe search engine , KidzSearch , by Google .
¬ ¬ Make sure paint and other materials are accessible . Use squeeze bottles of paint or fillin Elmer ’ s glue bottles with paints . You ’ ll need a range of sizes and types of brushes , a water cup , towel , paint palette , and paper or canvases of various sizes .
INSTRUCTIONS
1 . Begin with researching the life and art of Frida Kahlo for inspiration .
2 . Squeeze paints into palette , choose brushes , fill up water cup .
3 . Sketch self-portrait from imagination or using a mirror .
4 . Paint in a style inspired by Frida Kahlo , keeping in mind the elements and principles of art : line , shape , color , form , texture , value , space , contrast , unity , balance , emphasis , variety , movement , pattern . ( Printouts or books about these basic art vocabulary words will help children organize a piece of artwork .)
5 . Once done , clean up , ensuring the station looks the same way or better than when the child first started .
6 . Have the child reflect on the piece of artwork by writing down an explanation or recording a video discussing the portrait .
