When I was a humanitarian worker , my sole purpose ( and my soul ’ s purpose ) was what I gave to others . I felt so happy in this service that I didn ’ t really count my hours as working . I was just helping people . The honor of helping fulfilled me ; my love and compassion for others were enough to carry me through life . But this changed in important ways when I stopped working out in the field and returned to what my friends and family called the “ normal life .”

When I shifted from field work to office work based in Bangkok , I underwent a very big change . Even though I was still a humanitarian worker , without being in the field — which connected me directly with people — I lost the familiar spark I was used to having each morning . I envisioned for myself a different professional path that would allow me to explore new , exciting ways to serve others . And this path took me into unknown territory — the business world . As I walked this path , I was simply responding to an inner calling . But I did not know , really , where I was heading .
