KATAHDIN WOODS AND WATERS NATIONAL MONUMENT
Adventurers looking for a true sense of remoteness have been discovering the serenity of this national monument since it was established in 2016.
Katahdin Woods and Waters( KWW) comprises 87,563 acres of untouched wilderness that is open year-round. The monument begins an hour north of Bangor and is accessed by the Woods and Waters Scenic Byway( Route 11). This route offers 89 miles of roads to experience the monument, and natural highlights include views of Katahdin, wildlife, hiking trails, paddling, camping, waterfalls, and leaf peeping. Many visitors stop at the Patten Lumbermen’ s Museum, Shin Brook Falls, and the Ambajejus Boomhouse.
The East Branch of the Penobscot River winds through the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument offering excellent fishing, canoe trips, and whitewater.
Make sure you stop at the ​Tekakapim k Contact Station, located within the homeland and ancestral territory of Penobscot Nation. Here you’ ll find Wabanaki exhibits that will introduce you to the importance of the national monument.
