The West Branch Penobscot River is consistently regarded as one of the top fly-fishing destinations in the eastern United States, and many would argue it holds its own on a global level— particularly for wild brook trout.
Generations of Mainers have enjoyed fishing year round on our lakes and ponds. The ice fishing season depends on weather conditions, but usually starts in mid January, when you’ ll see temporary villages of ice shacks and shanties pop up on the frozen waterways. Many towns hold ice fishing derbies, where competitors try to catch the most— and largest— fish for prizes.
