Loudoun ’ s largest and most intact African American cemeteries . It is not associated with a specific church but serves several communities including Austin Grove , Howardsville and Willisville , each over a mile away .
There are approximately 260 interred in Rock Hill . Some were born enslaved . Some were born free after the Emancipation . Many served their country in foreign wars including WWI , the Korean War , and Vietnam . Families interred here represent a who ’ s who of Loudoun ’ s African American lineage – the Basil , Summer and Valentine families of Howardsville ; the Gaskin , Howard and Warner Families of Willisville .
Some of the earliest graves are the three oblique markers directly in front of you as you enter – Maria Frances and Jeremiah Berry were born enslaved and died free . Feel free to wander though the cemetery and enjoy its history .
Villages and Country Stores
Once a county staple , the village general store is now a rarity . In rural Loudoun where most people lived on the family farm , the village and its general store was the go-to place for cow feed , dry goods , U . S . mail , a cold Coke , and most importantly , local gossip .
The Philomont General Store still survives , and is one of Loudoun ’ s oldest continuously operating businesses . Philomont ’ s first “ country store ” dates to the 19 th century although the first building burned and in 1913 , the store moved across the street to its current location . Located along Snickersville Turnpike , the store served locals as well as travelers
passing between the village of Aldie and the gap in the Blue Ridge Mountains .
Today , the store still remains an operating post office , one of the last in Loudoun to do so . Originally , storekeepers were also designated postmasters , as their place of business was an obvious point of village congregation . More importantly , as business owners , they were able to keep accounts and manage money .
You will also ride through the village of Unison , passing the Unison General Store built circa 1880 , which served deviled eggs and cold drinks to horsemen , blacksmiths , vets and other hard-working locals until 1990 . For several years , the
