home to many types of large and small animals and dozens of bird species . They are wonderful spots for refreshing the spirit and contemplating the wonders of nature .
And , these streams feed our local drinking water supply too . As Loudoun County ’ s website explains : forests along streams and waterways , also known as “ riparian buffers ,” provide the greatest single protection of water quality .
They help to filter impurities from stormwater runoff , hold soil in place and decrease stream bank erosion , reduce the disruptive energy of moving flood waters , shade streams which keeps water cool and oxygenated , and provide a connected habitat and source of food for fish , insects , and wildlife .
But these natural and essential corridors are threatened by both neglect and growth . Hidden behind our homes and buildings , they tend to be forgotten and can become easily polluted and destroyed .
Connecting residents to this neighboring natural world and giving them the experience of its lovely streams and forests can offer many benefits . Immersion in nature and green spaces can enhance health and provide wonderful recreation and relaxation .
“ A large scale system of trails and parks will , according to the experience of other communities , raise property values , improve health and quality of life , attract business investment , improve security , increase regard and protection for natural areas and preserve critical natural drinking water and storm management systems . And , designed properly , it can even provide alternative transportation access for many residents traveling to work or for other purposes .”
