PDR ’ s to retire the development rights on those properties which might be developed , especially if located next to or near farmland that has already been permanently preserved .
If the PDR program in Loudoun County can be properly supported and administered , it can be strategically utilized to permanently retire those development rights on properties which would otherwise be developed . This would reduce the need for more schools , expanding rural roads , and creating additional water and sewer lines in rural areas , not to mention additional social services such as fire and police protection , saving all taxpayers in Loudoun millions and millions of dollars . Remember , cows just need plenty of green grass and abundant , clean water !
As tremendous growth in eastern Loudoun continues to move west , keeping rural Loudoun alive culturally , historically and economically will continue to be an enormous challenge . If this is something that most Loudoun residents want and appreciate , then everyone must make the case to the County Board of Supervisors that preserving western Loudoun as a rural area is in the best interest of all Loudoun citizens .
Given the opportunity to preserve a viable agriculture community , prosperous farms , a steady local food supply , open beautiful and natural spaces that all Loudoun citizens can enjoy , it is my hope that we can all work together to support those land use policies and programs that will preserve beautiful western Loudoun for future generations to enjoy . Otherwise , there will just be more suburban sprawl to navigate .
Born in the western foothills of Pennsylvania during World War II , John Adams has never been far away from agriculture . From the age of 10 , starting with 4-H projects to present day full-time retirement farming , John has experienced many different realms of agriculture . From milking cows on a neighbors farm , to majoring in dairy science at Penn State , to working for Kraft Foods , to conducting applied research at Clemson University , to representing the dairy industry in Washington , DC , to final retirement to enjoy raising cattle and gardening , John has always enjoyed being a part of agriculture . Now in the final phase of his life , he enjoys working in agriculture at the local level , having become a board member of the Loudoun Farm Bureau and elected President of the Loudoun Heritage Farm Museum .
