Saving Endangered Livestock Breeds from Extinction by paisley ashland
Loudoun County is rich with history . Housing battlefields , manor houses , and famous towns , history seems right around every corner . Today some members of Loudoun County are preserving history in an unusual way , right in their backyards with heritage livestock .
Over the last century the diversity of livestock breeds has plummeted . For most of America ’ s history , and as recently as the early 1900s it was common for most households to have a small flock of various chickens in their backyard , along with a few goats and maybe a cow . With the introduction of commercial farming , the traditional backyard farm fell out of favor , as well as the hardy multipurpose breeds that once thrived there . Now , those heritage breeds have been dwindling , with some actually going extinct .
