Veteran ’ s 100th birthday celebrated

Dorothy Wilson , a World War II Navy veteran and Pine Bush resident was honored for her service and her milestone birthday by American Legion # 1308 at the Catholic War Veteran Post 1937 in Pine Bush Saturday .
The ceremony , which also happened to coincide with the 100-year anniversary of the American legion , was also attended by members of VFW 5492 of Pine Bush who list the building in which the event was held as their headquarters .
Born Sept . 29 , 1918 , Wilson served one year in the Navy after seeing friends and family drafted and began her decades line ties to the Hudson Valley in 1962 with a move to New Windsor . In 1974 she moved to the state of Florida , before returning to Orange County in 1990 and her current residence of Pine Bush .
Among those in attendance was her son Royce Burns also of Pine Bush . Royce is the owner of New Life Van Auto and Truck Modification , a Pine Bush based company that modifies vehicles for those with physical disabilities .
“ Mom was born in the Albany area ,” Burns said . “ She often tells the story of seeing horse drawn carriages in her youth .”
She was motivated to enlist in the U . S . Navy in 1943 after her two brothers and friends were drafted for military service . Dorothy Wilson served in the Navy for a year and moved to New Windsor in 1962 . She relocated to the state of Florida in 1974 .
Wilson returned to Orange County in 1990 and has lived in Pine Bush since . She has two children , seven grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren . Wilson is active in the Pine Bush Senior Club and the Mountain View Methodist Church in Walker Valley . She is also a member of American Legion Post 1308 .

The ceremony was punctuated with a thorough folding of the American flag by attending , in uniform , local veterans . The folding even detailed the 13 folds of the flag and what each symbolizes .
“ Overwhelmed , just overwhelmed by all of it ,” Wilson concluded in a brief statement .
She was recently honored by Orange County Executive Steven M . Neuhaus as Orange County ’ s Citizen of the Month for September .
“ It ’ s a pleasure to offer Dorothy Wilson my best wishes on this landmark birthday ,” Neuhaus said . “ I wish her many more happy and healthy years . Dorothy is a wonderful woman who has

Wilson will also be honored on her birthday , September 29 , at the County ’ s ceremony to honor the 40 County residents who died 100 years ago on the same day during World War I . The event will be held at 10 a . m . at the County ’ s Veterans Memorial Cemetery , located at 111 Craigville Road in Goshen . The 40 Orange County residents served in Companies E and L of the 107th Regiment of the 27th Division and were killed in action during the Battle of the Hindenburg Line in Northern France .
