Clinton Street Car Show draws record crowd

By GARY M . AYD

In its fourth annual edition , the Clinton Street Car Show in historic downtown Montgomery set a record for most car registrations with around 120 per the unofficial count Sunday .

Cars parked at 9 a . m ., and the event , which is co-chaired by Brian Fitzpatrick and Village Trustee Mike Hembury , continued through 4 p . m . Sunday afternoon .
“ This was set up four years ago to help local businesses ,” Fitzpatrick , said . “ Half of our registration goes back to the registrants in the form of a gift card to a local business , while the other half goes to whichever charity we ’ re supporting each year .”
The registration fee to enter a car is $ 20 , with $ 10 from each being given this year to this year ’ s charity , the Valley Central Education Foundation , or VCEF . By simple math , approximately $ 1200 was raised in registration fees alone for the organization . VCEF , with a booth on site , held its own raffle , with tickets being at the rate one ticket for $ 1 , six tickets for $ 5 and 15-tickets for $ 10 . No official revenue total was given for the raffle .
“ The setting of the historic village and all its businesses and buildings just paints a great picture for this event ,” Fitzpatrick added when asked about why it continues to grow . In fact , per Fitzpatrick , the event has grown incrementally each year culminating in this year ’ s record number of registrants . An average year has been around 80 .
While no official statistics are kept on the number of people walking around throughout the seven-hour event , it appeared to the naked eye that at any given moment between 500-1000 people were roaming the roped off Montgomery streets on and around Clinton .
While no trophies or prizes are given , to preserve the generous business model , there were several ‘ best of ’ categories , including best in show mayor ’ s choice . This year ’ s winner of that award was a 1966 Chevelle . Other winning vehicles included a 1939 Chevy and a 1950 Ford truck .
In attendance was Skip Tetz , proud owner of a 1937 Cadillac . This car is rumored to have been ridden in by Hollywood luminary Clark Gable , though that could not be confirmed . Regardless , this car has won two previous shows , including the prestigious Pebble Beach show , considered to be the Super Bowl of car shows . So rare in fact is this model car , that only two of its kind were produced .
“ I want to say thank you to the entire

Village Staff , Police Department , DPW and a great committee of volunteers for all their hard work and support , which made this event such a wonderful Sunday experience for the car enthusiast , village businesses and for everyone to enjoy ,” Fitzpatrick said .
