The neighborhood unrest caused by
the dilapidated conditions of a Riverview
Street house has been a major topic of
discussion over the past month at Walden
Village Board meetings, and the panel
took the next step towards rectifying the
situation by passing a resolution on Sept.
6 that declared the building dangerous
and unsafe. The board will hold a
hearing concerning the property at its
next meeting on Tuesday to explore the
next course of action if the two dozen
violations found at the home are not fixed
in order to bring the building up to code.
The village could decide that the
unknown amount of tenants who live in
the house must vacate the site, or in the
most extreme case, the property could
be demolished. After multiple attempts
to access the interior of the home were
rebuffed by landlord Glen Ramcharitar,
the Building Department (with warrant
in hand) inspected the property on Sept.

is officially an Unsafe Building. As a
result of that report, the board ruled last
Tuesday that if the home is not made code
compliant in short order, the board will
take the next steps in the legal process.
At a special meeting on Aug. 22, the
board took action to repair six of the
28 violations that were identified at the
home. The village ordered all exterior
debris, including various junk and
vehicles, to be removed from the property.

Two eye
Shawangunk
highway job
By TED REMSNYDER
Over the past six years, Joseph
LoCicero has become a familiar face to
the local community in his role as the
Wallkill Board of Education President,
and now he’s seeking another public
position as the Town of Shawangunk
Highway Superintendent. With Deputy
Highway Superintendent Jim Barrett
leaving office at the end of the year, and
voters rejecting a measure in July that
would have changed the job from an
elected position to one appointed by the
Town Board, the Republican caucus on
Sept. 14 at Wallkill High School will most
likely determine who captures the seat.
LoCicero, who has been endorsed by
the Shawangunk Republican Committee,
will square off with Walkill resident Paul
Taylor on Wednesday night.
When Leif Spencer, the town’s
Republican Committee Chairman,
learned that Barrett was not interested
in running for the office in November, he
didn’t have to look far for a prospective
candidate. Spencer identified his fellow
Wallkill school board member LoCicero
as someone who would be ideal for the
job. “We were working together at the
Wallkill Fire Department barbecue and
I just mentioned in passing that we were
looking for a Highway Superintendent,”
Spencer said. “He spoke to his family and
friends and decided that he’d like to run.
I felt that he was a good all-around fit
and he’s grown up in this community. He
knows the people, the roads. He knows
what needs to get done in the community.
Plus, I think he knows how to go about
getting it done.”
