Watkins turns back challenger Danon at Shawangunk caucus

Continued from page 1
Danon instead .
Dewitt received a glowing nomination from his fellow councilman Robert Miller , who started off his speech with a warning that it was 32 pages long . He listed the numerous ways Dewitt has made a difference in the town over the last 16 years , such as the thriving recreation program and his dedication to the job — even answering myriad calls from residents at his personal number : ( 845 ) 800-5772 .
After seconding the nomination and describing Dewitt as a man who lives in the community and cares about the community , Curt Schoeberl added , “ That ’ s the kind of man we want serving in our community .”
At the end of the night , Dewitt was the clear frontrunner with 165 votes , taking the first place on the ballot .
Alex Danon , who was also endorsed by the Shawangunk Republican Committee , currently sits on the town ’ s Planning Board , Board of Assessment Review and rezoning committee . He is also the chair of the Main Street Revitalization Committee volunteer group and is an employee of the Wallkill Central School District .
As a 20-year member of the town ’ s Republican committee , Watkins was surprised by their decision not to endorse him . The chairman of the committee stated previously that they felt there was a “ personality conflict on the board ” and that Watkins wasn ’ t “ pulling his weight .”
That sentiment was not echoed by the town ’ s registered Republicans however , as they chose Watkins over Danon ( 90-66 ).
“ I want to thank everyone in this community for their support ,” said Matt Watkins . “ We ’ ve spent the last eight years making improvements . If you think we did good work , just wait until you see the next four .”
He added later that town residents are welcome to call him with their concerns at ( 914 ) 850-1776 .
Town Supervisor John Valk was nominated for a return to his post by Marty Hand , who explained that Valk has “ kept it affordable to live and raise a family in the Town of Shawangunk .”
“ We ’ re not finished yet ,” said Valk , adding that ( even after 20 years at the helm ) there is still a lot that he is working on and that he wants to accomplish . “ I really enjoy the job here .”
Also nominated for a return were Town Clerk Jane Rascoe , Town Justice Kevin Hunt and Highway Superintendent Joseph Locicero .
Locicero said he was eager to help improve the town , noting that the department is moving forward and doing great things .
“ I ’ m not ready to quit either ,” said Locicero .
