Horse owner Kimberly Childs said she was looking for an off-the-track thoroughbred to adopt for her daughter, Jenna Galasso, in 2015. She started her search at Akindale Thoroughbred Rescue in Pawling, NY. She tried three horses, the first of which was Revel. “As soon as I saw him I said this is it, he’s the one,” Childs said. It was only when Childs was filling out the adoption papers that she learned Revel is American Pharoah’s half-brother. American Pharoah is the only horse in history to win the grand-slam of horse- racing: the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, Belmont Stakes and Breeders’ Cup Classic. Revel and American Pharoah were born in the same stall and lived on the Zayat farm when they were young. Revel’s bloodline is full of impressive winners: American Pharoah’s and Revel’s father, Pioneer of the Nile, was runner- up in the 2009 Kentucky Derby, and his grandfather, Empire Maker, won the Belmont Stakes, Florida Derby and Wood Memorial. Also known by his racing name Hidden Hands, Revel’s racing career would not be so storied. Revel ran a total of four races and won one before a hip injury forced him to retire. But, retirement has brought him a happy and loving home at Futia Stables. Galasso is training Revel to jump. Carrots are always readily available, and he has plenty of pasture to play in. Childs said the seven-year-old is much like his half-brother: calm, quiet and smart. Revel is inquisitive, poking his large brown head out when visitors pass by his stall. He has one long strip of white running halfway down his face and a brown body that fades to black on his legs. While the little farm may not be the gilded mansions of horse racing barns in Kentucky, Revel’s stall is warm and dry on a cold, rainy October day, a haven filled with his owner’s love. Owner Jenna Galasso with Revel, half-brother of American Pharoah.
