20-year judge challenged in Montgomery
By JANE ANDERSON
Montgomery
Town
Justice
Frederick G. Gorss, who has served
on the town bench for 20 years, is
being challenged on Nov. 3 by lifelong
town resident Lynda Mitchell.
Mitchell is retired after 30 years
in the legal/law enforcement fields.
She was a prosecutor and assistant
district attorney for Orange County
before becoming a probation officer.
Those experiences have given her
a unique perspective that she feels
would translate well as town justice.
“My work history is public service;
it’s my passion, really,” Mitchell said.
She noted she has dealt in depth with
authorities, victims and defendants as
well, and supports rehabilitation through
such programs as Women’s Enrichment,
Alternative Sentencing and Drug Court.
Mitchell has a juris doctorate degree
from Pace University School of Law. She
is a past two-term president of the Walden
Woman’s Club, past president of the
Middletown Women’s University Club,
and is a volunteer with Historic Hudson

Gorss was born in Montgomery and

from Suffolk University Law School, and
has practiced law for 41 years. In addition

He is a member of the New York State

the American Arbitration Association.
Gorss has been the president of the
Riverside Cemetery for more than 25
years, and has served as an Orange

judge. In addition, he is a member
of the Wallkill Masonic Lodge #627,
Orange County Genealogical Society,
Montgomery New Horizon’s Senior

He is proud of his judicial record and
wishes to continue to serve the Town of
Montgomery.

“We were always of the position, as was
our legal counsel, that our policy with
Utica was clear in Utica’s responsibility to
affirm our claim and that nothing in the
civil settlement indicated otherwise.”
